Ch'ang-Hon Taekwon-Do
This name derives from the original set of patterns which
were created by Choi Hong Hi, the Korean founder of Taekwon-Do.
The Wells based Taekwon-Do School, under the
tutelage of Chief Instructor Mr Jason Burgess, trains under the
identity of the Wells Ch'ang-Hon Taekwon-Do Academy.
The club is a member of an independent National
Governing Body called Global Taekwondo
International (UK). In the 50th anniversary year of Taekwon-Do's
inauguration, in 2005, Mr Burgess took the decision to create more of an
individual identity for the school. The school was renamed, a new
club badge was created & along with it, a supporting philosophy for
the club.
The result was a blending of the traditional with the new; a
strong physical Art backed up by a sound philosophy.
More recently, various changes were made to how
the traditional drills are conducted & some were modified to make
them more effective. These changes have made a real, quantifiable
difference to the students effectiveness as martial artists. Some
changes included; modifying the old school style of set sparring &
to focus on improving the students' timing, distancing, accuracy &
speed of execution. This has had a major impact on the students
skill-base. Other changes included; more use of pads to generate
impact power; greater emphasis on realistic self protection
principles; deeper analysis of pattern movement & their application
in realistic scenarios. This last point gives the student some real
substance to their training.
All these changes reflect how progressive the GTI
is, as an association. The GTI leadership are constantly looking at
how to evlove the martial art for the better, how to give more value
to the student & instructor body. Not value in the sense of
monetary value, but real value for the time, effort &
money that the student invests.
